Both of the answers you have so far promote CashCrate – an outfit that purports to pay you for sitting on your backside and sampling products. What they don’t tell you is that you end up spending money…
The same rules apply to “work at home” as everywhere else: you have to create something of value that someone else wants and is willing to pay for. The more education you have, the higher the price you can command.
The options start with piecework and hand fabrication where you’ll be making a few dollars an hour, and go up to medical transcription work and telemarketing. I’m not aware that you can do customer service support from at-home, but it might be worth asking.
The information you’ve completely left out is: What education/training do you have, what CAN you do, and what region do you live in? Those more than anything determine where you go looking.
What do you think? Answer below!

Everyone thinks their home business is the best, but yahoo doesn’t allow us to give links in our answer. But what it comes down to is what you can put your heart into. Considering children is your major, you could find something related to that. For instance, my job is making parents aware of toxins in home. I help them get them out therefore reducing the entire family’s risk of cancer. It is something I put my heart into. So go with your heart! If you do, it doesn’t matter what company you choose to work for, your heart can take you places.

Well you said child care. Relate you work to your expertise or knowledge. Think of acessories / supplies for child care centre, for example, books on child care, young child education and the list goes on. If you can get the orders, keep a low stock at home and open an eBay store. I buy cheap on-line from other auctions like eBid, overstock, and resell for a profit. Use your imagination, it’s a little work but very satisfying.
I’m one of the few who started from zero capital by selling a few old stuff and expanding from there.
eBay however has some learing curve, but I’d managed to sell within 48 hours (get a first bid). Realy love it because I don’t need to include any link like any affiliate marketing or surveys, where you either pay monthly subscriptions or earn pittance. As for me, I am truely my own boss out of my passtime.
To your success.

As you are asking this question on Internet so you may be interested in internet job as well. But in my opinion it is not so easy job, you have to learn it first, you have to go through scam as well.
It is 100% true that some people are making millions of dollars on internet but some are just trying to do and they don’t succeed so try to understand the differences.
